About out Art:
“Sunday Morning Inishman” – Cecil Maguire
Cecil Maguire was born in 1930 in Lurgan and is a graduate of Queens University, Belfast. In 1967 he became an Associate of the Royal Ulster Academy. He began exhibiting in the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1971. In 1981, he retired from teaching at Lurgan College to concentrate on painting and travelling.
“Untitled” - Kenneth Webb
Kenneth Webb was born in 1927 in London. He studied in Gloucester College, obtained a National Diploma in Design and was appointed Head of the Painting School at Ulster College of Art in 1953. He Founded the Irish school of Landscape Painting and has since lectured for Queens University, Belfast. He is renowned as an inspiring teacher and gifted artist.
“ Tullow Horse Fair” – Arthur K Maderson
Arthur K Maderson was born in 1942 in Cappaquin, Waterford and studied Fine Art from 1959 to 1963 at Camberwell School of Art, London. Maderson is primarly concerned with the depiction of light – similar to that of nineteenth century French Impressionists, using broken brush strokes of thickly applied paint and vibrant juxtapositions of colour. He exhibits regularly at the RA and the RHA.
“Girl” – John O’Connell
John O’Connell was born in Derry City in 1935. He completed a B.E.D at Queens University, Belfast from 1959 to 1994. He taught at Patricks College, Knock, Belfast and was Head of Art Department from 1971 – 1994. On his retirement he has concentrated on painting full time from his home studio in Windsor Park, Belfast.
“ Flying Water” – Tom Spelman
Tom Spelman was born in Dublin and studied in the National Gallery of Art and Design. He won the Taylor Art Award. His main theme is the horse in art. Has exhibited in numerous shows throughout the country including R.H.A.
Robert Taylor Carson was born in Belfast in 1919. He studied in Belfast College of Art and is a member of the Royal Ulster Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy. As a war artist for the United States Air Force in Northern Ireland from 1943- 1945, he established himself as a Portrait Painter. He has continued to paint portraits as well as landscapes and figure studies in oil, watercolour and pastels. Best known for his character studies, he manages to convey a personality by capturing a glance or a gesture.
“In Wexford Town” – Maurice MacGonigal PPRHA
Maurice MacGonigal was born in Dublin in 1900 and died in 1979. He started work in his uncle Joshua Clarke’s Stained Glass Studio in North Fredericks Street, Dublin. He took up evening Art Classes at the Dublin Metropolitan School. He won the Taylor Scholarship in 1924 and in the same year, exhibited in the RHA for the first time. After a trip to Holland in 1927 to study painting, he returned to Dublin to teach art at the RHA’s Schools and at the DMSA.
“The Pikeman” – Fr. John O’Brien
Fr. John O’Brien was born in New Ross, Co Wexford. He has lived in Wexford town since 1962 and has taught maths & applied maths in St. Peters College for most of that period. Fr. O’Brien started painting in 1981as a pastime but quickly established himself as one of Wexford’s most accomplished and best loved artists. He is an ever popular exhibitor during Wexford Festival Opera.
